Don't Put Off Your Certifications!
This story is real! Don't let it become your
own: Temperance in Florida tells us that after successfully finishing the medical assisting
program she now has a difficult time landing her 1st job. She says: "I've applied to as many positions I possibly
could, but most employers here are looking for certified MAs. No one wants to give me a chance without it."
Medical Assistant Certification
While certification is almost always voluntary for medical assistants in the USA most EMPLOYERS set their own
standards when hiring. Many specifically state that certification is preferred or required which automatically
drops those applicants without it to the bottom of the stack. Unfortunately many medical assistants don't even
realize that they might already qualify for desired medical assistant certifications and recognized
credentials based on their vocational training, military duty, years of experience, or other
certifications they already have in their specific discipline.

California Medical
Assistants and Phlebotomists:
Progress in the healthcare industry and changes in the economy have also changed the way doctors
hire. Whether it is for a permanent or a temporary position, most prefer certified medical assistants
with recognized credentials behind their name. Medical assistants with blood drawing
responsibilities in California must be certified in phlebotomy before performing an invasive
venipuncture procedure. This requirement went into effect on April 9, 2003. AMT offers California recognized
certifications.
The AMT Board of Directors has determined that the following applicants may be considered
for certification without
further examination:
A. Applicant has taken and passed another certification organization’s generalist
examination for medical assistant/medical technologist, provided that the organization’s exam has been approved
by AMT, and provided that the applicant meets AMT’s training, experience, and educational
requirements.
B. Applicant has taken and passed a generalist medical
assistant/medical technologist level examination for state licensure, provided that the state’s exam has
been approved by AMT, and provided that the applicant meets AMT’s training, experience and educational
requirements. Provided, in both cases, that the applicant is currently employed, or has recent experience
(working in three of the last five years), as a medical assistant/medical technologist.
MILITARY TRAINING
An applicant for a certification exam from AMT based on training received in the
Armed Forces/Military must have completed a 50-week US military laboratory procedures training program and
credits for this training must have been earned in an accredited college or university leading to an
appropriate allied health, medical technologist degree.
